An avatar is a compact visual, such as a photo, illustration, or initials, that identifies a person, account, or organization. It appears beside names, in comments, and in navigation to add quick recognition. When no image exists it commonly falls back to initials or a placeholder icon.

Don't confuse it with
An avatar represents an identity with an image or initials; a badge is a small marker (often placed on an avatar) showing a count or status. They frequently combine but serve different purposes.
